India has pledged full support to Sheikh Hasina and emphasized the protection of minorities in Bangladesh, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Jaishankar is set to address both houses of Parliament on Tuesday regarding the situation in Bangladesh. He will first speak to the Rajya Sabha at 2:30 pm, followed by a statement to the Lok Sabha at 3:30 pm.
Earlier, Jaishankar briefed an all-party meeting on the situation, revealing that Sheikh Hasina has relocated to India. He assured that India would provide all necessary assistance to the Bangladeshi leader. Jaishankar mentioned that the Indian government is awaiting details on Sheikh Hasina’s future plans.
On X, Jaishankar reported, “Today, I briefed an All-Party meeting in Parliament about the current developments in Bangladesh. I appreciate the unanimous support and understanding shown.”
During the briefing, Jaishankar informed the attendees that the Indian government is in contact with the Bangladesh Army. He indicated that the situation is evolving, and the government will act as needed. Sources revealed that there are approximately 20,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, with 8,000 having already returned. Jaishankar assured that the Indian High Commission is still operational and that efforts are focused on protecting minorities.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, questioned the government’s long-term and short-term strategies and inquired about potential foreign involvement. The government stated that all possible angles are being investigated. Following the briefing, Rahul Gandhi supported the government’s measures, emphasizing national interest.
Bangladesh is experiencing a turbulent political climate after Sheikh Hasina resigned amid widespread protests, primarily led by students demanding the end of a quota system for government jobs. The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka has suggested an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to address the country’s ongoing issues.
Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening after her resignation, and it remains uncertain whether she will stay in Delhi or move elsewhere.
