For the sixth consecutive year, IIT Madras has retained its top spot in both the ‘overall’ and ‘engineering’ categories in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024.
Meanwhile, IISc Bengaluru continues to be ranked as the best university, a position it has held for the past nine years.
In the college category, Hindu College, Delhi, has been ranked number 1, with Miranda House following in second place, as per the NIRF 2024 rankings released by the Ministry of Education on Monday.
IISc Bangalore also secured the second position in the ‘overall’ category.
IIT Madras once again claimed the title of the top engineering institute, with IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay coming in second and third, respectively.
IIT-Madras has maintained its position as the best engineering college for the past nine years.

In the management category, IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta are among the top five institutions.
The ninth edition of the NIRF rankings evaluates institutions across five broad parameters: teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
This year, three new categories were introduced, bringing the total to 16.
These categories include overall, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, innovation, state universities, open universities, and skill universities.
IIM Ahmedabad has been ranked as the best management institute for the fifth consecutive year, while AIIMS New Delhi retains its position as the top medical college in India.
In the NIRF 2024 Innovation category, IIT Bombay claimed the top spot, followed by IIT Madras in second place and IIT Hyderabad in third.
This year, a total of 10,885 higher education institutions participated in the NIRF rankings.
The NIRF, introduced by the Education Ministry in 2015, ranks higher educational institutions across India based on a methodology developed by a Core Committee set up by the MHRD.
The newly introduced open universities category saw the Indira Gandhi National Open University take the top spot, followed by Netaji Subhash Open University (Kolkata) and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (Ahmedabad) in second and third places, respectively.
In the medical category, AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, CMC Vellore, and NIMHANS have retained their top positions.
In the pharmacy category, Jamia Hamdard has risen one spot to secure the top position, with NIPER Hyderabad in second and BITS Pilani maintaining its third position.
JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty, ranks fourth. Anna University has been placed first among state public universities, a new category in this ninth edition of the rankings.
