Farmers demand guaranteed MSP amid limited Govt procurement

Farmers are calling for guaranteed Minimum Support Prices (MSP) amid limited government procurement of their produce.

Arwan Singh Pandher, a leading figure in the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, highlighted that only a small percentage of crops are purchased at MSP.

Statistics from the Agriculture Ministry show that merely 18% of wheat, 50% of paddy, 0.43% of pulses, and even smaller percentages of other crops such as toria, sarson oil, jawar, and bajra are procured at MSP.

Pandher pointed out that this is a major issue fueling the ongoing protests by farmers represented by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) (Non-Political). These groups have been protesting at the Shambhu border for 165 days, demanding a legal guarantee for MSP. Key farmer leaders, including Tajveer Singh, Mahesh Choudhary, and Sarvan Singh Pandher, have announced a series of actions to escalate their protests:

– August 1: Burning copies of the new criminal laws and holding demonstrations at district headquarters.
– August 15: A nationwide tractor march to Delhi, encouraging farmers to gather at borders such as Sanghu and Shambhu.
– August 21: Commemorating 200 days of the Farmers’ Movement 2.0.
– August 31: Marking 200 days of protest at the Shambhu border.
– September 15 and 22: Farmers’ rallies in Jind and Pipli, Haryana.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), which represents 40 farmer unions across India, along with the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), has called for intensified protests to push for a law guaranteeing MSP for various crops. This decision was reached at a joint conference in Delhi, attended by over 150 leaders from various organizations across the country.

Pandher urged farmers to be prepared for the planned actions, stressing the importance of pressing the central government to resolve the longstanding issues in the agricultural sector.
