Doctors at Fortis Mohali revolutionize treatment of complex ailments via robot-aided surgeries

The Department of Robotic SurgeryFortis Hospital Mohali, has continued to set new benchmarks in advanced medical care, having successfully performed   over 2,600 robot-aided surgeries using the world’s most advanced 4th Generation Robot – Da Vinci Xi. In a significant move to meet the growing demand and ensure even greater patient access to minimally invasive procedures, the hospital has now added a second Da Vinci Xi robot to its state-of-the-art surgical capabilities.

Doctors from various specialties of Fortis Hospital Mohali, who have conducted robot-aided surgeries, shared the benefits of robot-aided surgeries during a press conference organized today. The team of doctors including Dr Atul Joshi, Director, General Surgery, Laparoscopic and Oncology Surgeon; Dr Swapna Misra, Director of Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Robotic Surgery; Dr RP Doley, Director, General Surgery; Dr Rohit Dadhwal, Consultant, Department of Urology, Andrology and Robotic Surgery; and Dr Kuldeep Thakur, Consultant, Head and Neck Onco-surgery, discussed how robot-aided surgeries has been revolutionizing the treatment of various complex ailments.

Giving an insight, Dr Atul Joshi, said, “Robot-aided surgery has transformed the field of minimal invasive surgery. It provides a 3D view of the operative field via a special camera inserted into the body of the patient. Robot-assisted arms robotic arms exhibit more dexterity than the human hand’ that can rotate 360 degrees.”

Talking on similar lines, Dr Swapna Misra, said, “Robot-aided-Surgery has been established as the gold standard procedure for almost all gynecological surgeries and has revolutionized the treatment of various gynecological diseases.” Dr Misra has conducted the highest number of gynecological robotic surgeries in the country, besides being the only TR 500 trained robotic surgeon in the country.

Discussing the same, Dr RP Doley, said, “Fortis Cancer Institute is renowned for its comprehensive facilities catering to all complex cancers. This has been made possible through robot-aided surgeries as doctors at Fortis Mohali adopt a multidisciplinary approach for treatment.”

Dr Rohit Dadhwal, said, “We’ve been successfully conducting robot-assisted Partial Nephrectomy (Removal of tumour with preservation of kidney), reconstructive procedures (correction of urinary passage like pyeloplasty, ureteric reimplantation, boari flap reconstruction, bladder diverticulectomy etc.).”

Dr Kuldeep Thakur, said, “Compared to the usual stay of 5-6 days in traditional surgery, Robot-assisted surgery ensures less blood loss, early mouth feeding, shorter hospitalization and fast recovery.”
