Andy Rourke, the renowned bassist of The Smiths, succumbs to cancer at the age of 59.
The renowned rock band The Smiths has confirmed the passing of their bassist, Andy Rourke, at the age of 59. Guitarist Johnny Marr expressed profound sadness and disclosed that Rourke had been engaged in a prolonged battle against pancreatic cancer.
Marr took to Twitter to describe Rourke as a kind and beautiful soul to those who were acquainted with him, as well as an immensely talented musician cherished by fans. The band asked for privacy during this sorrowful period. Rourke’s official social media accounts also confirmed his passing
Rourke made significant contributions to The Smiths, performing on the band’s most iconic tracks such as “This Charming Man” and “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.” Following the disbandment of the group in 1987, he collaborated with lead singer Morrissey on his solo singles. Rourke’s exceptional bass skills can be heard on all four of The Smiths’ studio albums: “The Smiths” (1984), “Meat Is Murder” (1985), “The Queen Is Dead” (1986), and “Strangeways, Here We Come” (1987).
Rourke’s bandmates and fellow musicians flooded with messages of remembrance and admiration. Mike Joyce, Rourke’s bandmate in The Smiths, hailed him as the most skilled bass player he had the honor of playing alongside, as well as the kindest and most amusing person he had ever known. Mat Osman, the bassist of Suede, lauded Rourke as a one-of-a-kind and instantly recognizable bassist. Producer Stephen Street conveyed his sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to Rourke’s loved ones.
Throughout his career, Rourke engaged in collaborations with various artists, including the Pretenders, Killing Joke, Sinead O’Connor, Aziz Ibrahim, and Badly Drawn Boy. Additionally, he held membership in the supergroup Freebass, which featured Gary “Mani” Mounfield from the Stone Roses and Peter Hook from New Order. Rourke’s exceptional musical versatility and talent left an enduring impact on the industry.
