Muscat Mosque shooting: Indian among 6 killed; 3 perpetrators shot dead

The shooting at Muscat’s Ali bin Abi Talib mosque resulted in the death of six individuals, including an Indian national.

Three perpetrators involved in the attack were killed during the incident, which occurred on the evening of July 16 in the Al Wadi Al Kabir area.

The Indian embassy in Muscat confirmed the casualty and reported another Indian was injured in the gunfire.

The Royal Oman Police, along with military and security services, concluded their response to the incident, as reported by the Oman News Agency.

The attack, a rare occurrence in Oman known for its low crime rate and mediation efforts in the region, took place during the Muslim day of Ashura, significant for Shia Muslims commemorating Imam Hussein’s martyrdom.

This rare event in Oman, known for its low crime rate and regional mediation efforts, coincided with the Muslim day of Ashura, a significant time for Shia Muslims marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

Another Indian was injured during the attack on the night of July 16 in the Al Wadi Al Kabir area. The Indian Embassy in Muscat conveyed condolences and confirmed the incident, stating that one Indian citizen had died and another was injured.

According to the Oman News Agency, three assailants were killed by authorities, including the Royal Oman Police and military and security services, who have completed their response to the incident.

Among the casualties were four Pakistanis and a policeman, with 28 others of various nationalities injured and receiving treatment in healthcare facilities.

The Times of Oman reported an eyewitness account describing a tense atmosphere in the mosque as gunfire persisted for over an hour, causing panic among approximately 500-600 worshippers present.

The Royal Oman Police expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
