Fortis Mohali organizes week-long activities to highlight importance of nutrition and balanced diet

To create awareness on the importance of good nutrition and health, week-long activities as part of the National Nutrition Week were organized at Fortis Hospital Mohali. The theme of this year’s event was ‘Celebrate a World of Flavors’.

The events planned at Fortis Mohali aimed at promoting the right nutrition, right food choices and right eating habits among different age groups of the society. Dietitian Sonia Gandhi, Head, Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Fortis Hospital Mohali, spearheaded the awareness week activities.

Day 1 of the celebrations saw students from various schools of the Tricity (Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali) take part in a slogan-writing competition on the theme “Invest in yourself – Buy nutrition to sensitize our future citizens” at Fortis Mohali.

Abhijit Singh, Head-SBU, Fortis Hospital Mohali, welcomed the students and encouraged them to focus on the right nutrition. Dr Vikramjit Singh Dhaliwal, Medical Director, further emphasized on the importance of eating a balanced diet. A host of fun-filled activities were also organised by the Dietetics team which received active participation from the students. 

On Day 2, Dietitian Gandhi visited an orphanage — Ashiana Children’s Home, Sector 16, Panchkula, where she gave a health talk on nutrition and distributed healthy goodies to the children.

An educational programme on “Healthy eating habits and food hygiene” was also organised by the Fortis service team in a simple interactive manner on Day 3. As part of the activities, Dietitian Gandhi also sensitized students of Aryans Group of Colleges and Universal Group of Institutions on “Nutrition – it’s the matter of Facts and Science” on Day 4 of the celebrations.

Other activities such as a talk session for senior citizens on the topic “Role of Nutrition for Senior-Citizens” was also held on Day 5. The nutritionist also discussed issues such as slowing down of the metabolism, changes in the digestive system and appetite.

Meanwhile, educational sessions on “Role of diet for well-being and scientific handling of their nutrition related challenges” were also chaired by Dietitian Gandhi for several corporate organizations.

Discussing the importance of a balanced diet, Dietitian Gandhi said, Nutrition plays a paramount in our daily life. Intake of nourishing food and liquid diet provides energy to the body and strengthens our core, thereby providing immunity. Several diseases occur due to wrong diet as the body is devoid of essential nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber and water etc.”

The National Nutrition Week is an annual event organized by the Food and Nutrition Board under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.
