In a landmark development for India’s healthcare sector, Fortis Hospital Mohali has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Intuitive, a global leader in robotic-assisted surgery, to establish India’s first Total Program Observation (TPO) site in a non-metro city.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen the country’s robotic-assisted surgery ecosystem by creating a structured learning platform where surgeons, healthcare professionals, hospital administrators, and clinical teams can observe and understand how a successful robotic surgery programme is developed, managed, and sustained in a real-world healthcare setting.
Strengthening Robotic Surgery in India.
The Total Program Observation initiative goes beyond clinical demonstrations. Participants will gain practical insights into programme governance, multidisciplinary team coordination, patient safety protocols, surgeon training pathways, financial planning, executive leadership, and long-term service development.
The programme aims to support healthcare institutions across India in building sustainable robotic-assisted surgery programmes while maintaining high standards of patient care and operational excellence.
Fortis Hospital Mohali has emerged as one of Northern India’s leading centres for robotic-assisted surgery. The hospital has successfully performed more than 3,600 robotic-assisted procedures across multiple specialties, including:
Gynaecology
Gastrointestinal Oncology
Urology
Head and Neck Surgery
Supported by 18 robotic surgeons and two da Vinci Surgical Systems, the hospital serves patients from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, and neighbouring regions.
Its recognition as India’s first non-metro Total Program Observation site highlights the growing importance of advanced healthcare infrastructure beyond metropolitan cities.
Speaking on the collaboration, Fortis Mohali officials emphasised that robotic-assisted surgery is witnessing rapid growth across India. They noted that hospitals are increasingly looking beyond technology adoption and focusing on creating sustainable programmes supported by structured training, governance, and best clinical practices.
Leaders from Intuitive also described the partnership as an important milestone in India’s journey towards expanding access to minimally invasive surgical care. They highlighted that observation sites enable healthcare institutions to learn directly from established robotic surgery programmes and implement these best practices within their own hospitals.
A Significant Step for Indian Healthcare
The collaboration reflects India’s growing leadership in robotic-assisted surgery and demonstrates how advanced medical technologies are increasingly becoming accessible beyond major metropolitan centres.
By encouraging knowledge sharing, structured education, and programme development, the initiative is expected to improve patient outcomes while supporting the next generation of robotic surgery programmes across the country.
As robotic-assisted surgery continues to evolve, the Fortis Mohali and Intuitive partnership represents a significant step towards building a stronger, more sustainable, and future-ready healthcare ecosystem in India.
