Anupam Kher Opens Up About the Deeply Personal Inspiration Behind Tanvi The Great

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has stepped into the director’s chair once again with Tanvi The Great, a powerful drama that explores love, resilience, and hope through the eyes of a young girl with autism. Speaking at the trailer launch event, Kher shared the emotional journey that led him to make the film, nearly 23 years after his directorial debut Om Jai Jagadish. “That film wasn’t my story,” he reflected. “This one is—from the heart.”

The spark for Tanvi The Great came during a family wedding in Gurgaon four years ago. Kher recalled a quiet yet profound moment with his then 13-year-old niece Tanvi, who is on the autism spectrum. While others danced, Tanvi stood quietly looking at the mountains. When Kher asked what she was looking at, she softly replied, “I’m looking at my world.” That line, Kher said, stayed with him. “She couldn’t explain what her world was, and I couldn’t understand it—but that was the seed. I wanted to explore that invisible world in a way that felt magical, meaningful, and larger-than-life.”

Tanvi The Great is not just a deeply personal film for Kher—it’s also a cinematic statement. Featuring Shubhangi Dutt in a breakout role as Tanvi Raina, the film also stars Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Pallavi Joshi, Karan Tacker, Nassar, and Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen. Kher himself plays Col. Pratap Raina, Tanvi’s grandfather, who wrestles with doubt and hope as he watches her chase an impossible dream—to join the Indian Army and salute the flag at Siachen in honor of her late father.

Backed by Anupam Kher Studio and NFDC, and releasing on 18 July 2025, Tanvi The Great is being billed as a musical drama with epic scale and emotional depth. “This isn’t just a film,” Kher said, “it’s a celebration of difference, of courage, and of seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.” With music by MM Keeravani and global distribution via Excel Entertainment and AA Films, Tanvi The Great promises to be as personal as it is universal.
